As a ten-year veteran teaching Social Studies at Revere High School, I stress the importance of getting my students involved in making their voice heard within their school and the community. I enjoy having students debate and participate in simulations to create an active learning environment where they become more critical thinkers and decision makers. In addition, I enjoy taking my students on various field trips including an annual trip to the United Nations & Ellis Island in New York City.
I have been instrumental in expanding participation in the National History Day contest on both the middle sand high school levels in Revere. Students prepare projects around an annual historical theme and compete in various categories including poster-boards, documentaries, papers, and performances. My students are able to utilize their research and creative talents to present at the district and state levels.
The Voices Rising project has allowed me to design my own project-based lesson and has exposed me to valuable primary sources and historian seminars. I have a stronger connection to the National Parks in Massachusetts and the resources that are available on-line and through field trips. This research process has encouraged me to push my students to seek out and utilize these resources in analyzing and making their own conclusions about past events.
